如是我聞:一時佛在王舍城 須摩竭陀池岸。


爾時奢羅浮梵志在大眾中而作是言:

「我知釋子所說教法。我所知見,勝彼釋子!」

當于爾時有眾多比丘,入城乞食,見奢羅浮梵志在彼池岸,聞其所說,作如是言:

「我知釋子所有法教。我所知者,出過於彼!」

時諸比丘聞此語已,還至僧坊,收攝衣鉢,洗手足已,往詣佛所,頂禮佛足,在一面坐,白佛言:

「世尊!我等今日入城乞食。食訖 * 已還,歸於其中,路經須摩竭陀池。彼池岸上有一梵志,名奢羅浮,在大眾中唱如是言: 『我知釋子所有教法。我所知者,出過於彼!』 善哉──世尊!──唯願當往彼池岸!」

爾時如來默然許之,與諸比丘前後圍遶,往詣於彼須摩竭陀池。時奢羅浮遙見佛來,即從坐起,敷置高座,尋白佛言:

「可就此坐。」

佛即便就座,坐已,而告之曰:

「汝實作是言: 『我知釋子所有法教。我所知者,出過於彼!』 如是說不?」

時彼梵志默然而住。佛復告曰:

「何故默然而不答我?汝若解者,隨汝意說;若不解者,吾當為汝分別宣說,令汝具足。汝今若能具足說者,吾助爾喜。梵志!當知世若有人說言:『如來非阿羅呵.三藐三佛陀者。』如是說者,我稱善哉。當問彼言: 『汝以何事說言如來非阿羅呵.三藐三佛陀?』 此眾生等於理不決,不能正答,更說世間其餘談論。以諸雜語間錯其中,憍慢矜高,生毀害心。以不能答如斯問故,默然而住,慚愧低頭,失於機辯。奢羅浮!汝今亦爾。設復有人作如是言:『沙門瞿曇能善顯示,是有過法。』如是說者,我亦稱善。當問於彼: 『以何智知如斯之事?』 彼不能答,更說其餘世間談論。錯亂其中,辭窮理屈,慚愧低頭,默然而住,失於機辯。亦如汝今無有異也。若復說言:『沙門瞿曇所有弟子無善迴向,不具持戒。』我亦稱善。而問於彼: 『汝以何法驗知斯事?』 彼不能答,更說世間其餘談論。錯亂其中,辭窮理屈,慚愧低頭,默然而住,失於機辯。汝今亦爾。」

當于爾時奢羅浮同梵行者語奢羅浮:

「汝今何故默然不答?汝昔日時恒於大眾多人之中而言: 『我所知見,出過瞿曇所有教法!』 汝今宜問沙門瞿曇。云何乃使沙門瞿曇反問 * 於汝,詰汝使說,作如是言: 『汝所說者,若能具足,吾助爾喜,稱慶善哉。如其不具,吾當為汝分別宣示,令得具足。』 ?」

時奢羅浮聞斯語已,亦復默然,無所陳說。爾時世尊在須摩竭陀池岸作師子吼已,即從坐起,還王舍城。佛去不久,彼諸同行種種呵責,作如是言:

「汝於今者如截角牛,在屏處吼。汝亦如是,於閑靜處作師子吼,於沙門瞿曇前默然無所說。亦如童女,欲作男子聲,然不能作,還為女聲。汝亦如是,欲學瞿曇作師子吼,而不能成。亦如雌野干,欲作師子吼,然其出聲,故作野干,終不能成師子之聲。」

諸同行者如是種種呵責奢羅浮已,各四散 * 而去。

如是我聞:一時佛住王舍城迦蘭陀竹園。


時王舍城有外道出家名舍羅步,住須摩竭陀池側,於自眾中作如是唱言:

「沙門釋子法我悉知,我先已知彼法、律而悉棄捨。」

時有眾多比丘晨朝著衣持缽,入王舍城乞食。聞有外道名舍羅步,住王舍城須摩竭陀池側,於自眾中作如是唱:

「沙門釋子所有法、律我悉已知,先已知彼法、律,然後棄捨。」

聞是語已,乞食畢,還精舍,舉衣缽,洗足已,往詣佛所,稽首禮足,退坐一面,白佛言:

「世尊!我等晨朝著衣持缽,入王舍城乞食,聞有外道出家名舍羅步,住王舍城須摩竭陀池側,於自眾中作是唱言: 『沙門釋子法我已悉知,知彼法、律已,然後棄捨。』 善哉!世尊!可自往彼須摩竭陀池側,憐愍彼故!」

爾時世尊默然而許,於日晡時從禪覺,往到須摩竭陀池側外道舍羅步所。時舍羅步外道出家遙見世尊來,即敷床座,請佛令坐。佛即就坐,告舍羅步言:

「汝實作是語: 『沙門釋子所有法、律我悉已知,知彼法、律已,然後棄捨。』 耶?」

時捨羅步默而不答。

佛告舍羅步:

「汝今應說,何故默然?汝所知滿足者,我則隨喜;不滿足者,我當令汝滿足。」

時舍羅步猶故默然。如是第二、第三說,彼再三默然住。

時舍羅步有一梵行弟子白舍羅步言:

「師應往詣沙門瞿曇說所知見,今沙門瞿曇自來詣此,何故不說?沙門瞿曇又告師言: 『若滿足者,我則隨喜;不滿足者,當令滿足。』 何故默然而不記說?」

彼舍羅步梵行弟子勸時亦復默然。

爾時世尊告舍羅步:

「若復有言: 『沙門瞿曇非如來、應、等正覺。』 我若善諫善問,善諫善問時彼則遼落說諸外事;或忿恚慢覆,對閡不忍,無由能現;或默然抱愧低頭,密自思省,如今舍羅步。若復作如是言 『非沙門瞿曇無正法、律』 者,我若善諫善問,彼亦如汝今日默然而住。若復有言 『非沙門瞿曇聲聞善向』 者,我若善諫善問,彼亦乃至如汝今日默然而住。」

爾時世尊於須摩竭陀池側師子吼已,從坐起而去。

爾時舍羅步梵行弟子語舍羅步言:

「譬如有牛,截其兩角,入空牛欄中,跪地大吼;師亦如是,於無沙門瞿曇弟子眾中作師子吼。譬如女人欲作丈夫聲,發聲即作女聲;師亦如是,於非沙門瞿曇弟子眾中作師子吼。譬如野干欲作狐聲,發聲還作野干聲;師亦如是,於非沙門瞿曇弟子眾中欲作師子吼。」


時舍羅步梵行弟子於舍羅步面前呵責毀呰已,從坐起去。

Sarabhasuttaṃ

Evaṃ me sutaṃ– ekaṃ samayaṃ bhagavā rājagahe viharati gijjhakūṭe pabbate. Tena kho pana samayena sarabho nāma paribbājako acirapakkanto hoti imasmā dhammavinayā. So rājagahe parisati [var] evaṃ vācaṃ bhāsati– “aññāto mayā samaṇānaṃ sakyaputtikānaṃ dhammo. Aññāya ca panāhaṃ samaṇānaṃ sakyaputtikānaṃ dhammaṃ evāhaṃ tasmā dhammavinayā apakkanto”ti. Atha kho sambahulā bhikkhū pubbaṇhasamayaṃ nivāsetvā pattacīvaramādāya rājagahaṃ piṇḍāya pavisiṃsu. Assosuṃ kho te bhikkhū sarabhassa paribbājakassa rājagahe parisati evaṃ vācaṃ bhāsamānassa “aññāto mayā samaṇānaṃ sakyaputtikānaṃ dhammo. Aññāya ca panāhaṃ samaṇānaṃ sakyaputtikānaṃ dhammaṃ evāhaṃ tasmā dhammavinayā apakkanto”ti.

Atha kho te bhikkhū rājagahe piṇḍāya caritvā pacchābhattaṃ piṇḍapātapaṭikkantā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṃsu; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdiṃsu. Ekamantaṃ nisinnā kho te bhikkhū bhagavantaṃ etadavocuṃ– “sarabho nāma, bhante, paribbājako acirapakkanto imasmā dhammavinayā. So rājagahe parisati evaṃ vācaṃ bhāsati– ‘aññāto mayā samaṇānaṃ sakyaputtikānaṃ dhammo. Aññāya ca panāhaṃ samaṇānaṃ sakyaputtikānaṃ dhammaṃ evāhaṃ tasmā dhammavinayā apakkanto’ti. Sādhu bhante, bhagavā yena sippinikātīraṃ [var] paribbājakārāmo yena sarabho paribbājako tenupasaṅkamatu anukampaṃ upādāyā”ti. Adhivāsesi bhagavā tuṇhībhāvena.

Atha kho bhagavā sāyanhasamayaṃ paṭisallānā vuṭṭhito yena sippinikātīraṃ paribbājakārāmo yena sarabho paribbājako tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā paññatte āsane nisīdi Nisajja kho bhagavā sarabhaṃ paribbājakaṃ etadavoca– “saccaṃ kira tvaṃ, sarabha, evaṃ vadesi– ‘aññāto mayā samaṇānaṃ sakyaputtikānaṃ dhammo. Aññāya ca panāhaṃ samaṇānaṃ sakyaputtikānaṃ dhammaṃ evāhaṃ tasmā dhammavinayā apakkanto”’ti? Evaṃ vutte sarabho paribbājako tuṇhī ahosi.

Dutiyampi kho, bhagavā sarabhaṃ paribbājakaṃ etadavoca– “vadehi, sarabha, kinti te aññāto samaṇānaṃ sakyaputtikānaṃ dhammo? Sace te aparipūraṃ bhavissati, ahaṃ paripūressāmi. Sace pana te paripūraṃ bhavissati, ahaṃ anumodissāmī”ti. Dutiyampi kho sarabho paribbājako tuṇhī ahosi.

Tatiyampi kho bhagavā sarabhaṃ paribbājakaṃ etadavoca– (“yo [var] kho sarabha paññāyati samaṇānaṃ sakyaputtikānaṃ dhammo) [var] “vadehi, sarabha, kinti te aññāto samaṇānaṃ sakyaputtikānaṃ dhammo? Sace te aparipūraṃ bhavissati, ahaṃ paripūressāmi. Sace pana te paripūraṃ bhavissati, ahaṃ anumodissāmī”ti. Tatiyampi kho sarabho paribbājako tuṇhī ahosi.

Atha kho te paribbājakā sarabhaṃ paribbājakaṃ etadavocuṃ– “yadeva kho tvaṃ, āvuso sarabha, samaṇaṃ gotamaṃ yāceyyāsi tadeva te samaṇo gotamo pavāreti. Vadehāvuso sarabha, kinti te aññāto samaṇānaṃ sakyaputtikānaṃ dhammo? Sace te aparipūraṃ bhavissati, samaṇo gotamo paripūressati. Sace pana te paripūraṃ bhavissati, samaṇo gotamo anumodissatī”ti. Evaṃ vutte sarabho paribbājako tuṇhībhūto maṅkubhūto pattakkhandho adhomukho pajjhāyanto appaṭibhāno nisīdi.

Atha kho bhagavā sarabhaṃ paribbājakaṃ tuṇhībhūtaṃ maṅkubhūtaṃ pattakkhandhaṃ adhomukhaṃ pajjhāyantaṃ appaṭibhānaṃ viditvā te paribbājake etadavoca–

“Yo kho maṃ, paribbājakā [var] , evaṃ vadeyya– ‘sammāsambuddhassa te paṭijānato ime dhammā anabhisambuddhā’ti, tamahaṃ tattha sādhukaṃ samanuyuñjeyyaṃ samanugāheyyaṃ samanubhāseyyaṃ. So vata mayā sādhukaṃ samanuyuñjiyamāno samanugāhiyamāno samanubhāsiyamāno aṭṭhānametaṃ anavakāso yaṃ so tiṇṇaṃ ṭhānānaṃ nāññataraṃ [var] ṭhānaṃ nigaccheyya, aññena vā aññaṃ paṭicarissati, bahiddhā kathaṃ apanāmessati, kopañca dosañca appaccayañca pātukarissati, tuṇhībhūto maṅkubhūto [var] pattakkhandho adhomukho pajjhāyanto appaṭibhāno nisīdissati, seyyathāpi sarabho paribbājako.

“Yo kho maṃ, paribbājakā, evaṃ vadeyya– ‘khīṇāsavassa te paṭijānato ime āsavā aparikkhīṇā’ti, tamahaṃ tattha sādhukaṃ samanuyuñjeyyaṃ samanugāheyyaṃ samanubhāseyyaṃ. So vata mayā sādhukaṃ samanuyuñjiyamāno samanugāhiyamāno samanubhāsiyamāno aṭṭhānametaṃ anavakāso yaṃ so tiṇṇaṃ ṭhānānaṃ nāññataraṃ ṭhānaṃ nigaccheyya, aññena vā aññaṃ paṭicarissati, bahiddhā kathaṃ apanāmessati, kopañca dosañca appaccayañca pātukarissati, tuṇhībhūto maṅkubhūto pattakkhandho adhomukho pajjhāyanto appaṭibhāno nisīdissati, seyyathāpi sarabho paribbājako.

“Yo kho maṃ, paribbājakā, evaṃ vadeyya– ‘yassa kho pana te atthāya dhammo desito, so na niyyāti takkarassa sammā dukkhakkhayāyā’ti, tamahaṃ tattha sādhukaṃ samanuyuñjeyyaṃ samanugāheyyaṃ samanubhāseyyaṃ. So vata mayā sādhukaṃ samanuyuñjiyamāno samanugāhiyamāno samanubhāsiyamāno aṭṭhānametaṃ anavakāso yaṃ so tiṇṇaṃ ṭhānānaṃ nāññataraṃ ṭhānaṃ nigaccheyya, aññena vā aññaṃ paṭicarissati, bahiddhā kathaṃ apanāmessati, kopañca dosañca appaccayañca pātukarissati, tuṇhībhūto maṅkubhūto pattakkhandho adhomukho pajjhāyanto appaṭibhāno nisīdissati, seyyathāpi sarabho paribbājako”ti. Atha kho bhagavā sippinikātīre paribbājakārāme tikkhattuṃ sīhanādaṃ naditvā vehāsaṃ pakkāmi.

Atha kho te paribbājakā acirapakkantassa bhagavato sarabhaṃ paribbājakaṃ samantato vācāyasannitodakena [var] sañjambharimakaṃsu [var] – “seyyathāpi, āvuso sarabha, brahāraññe jarasiṅgālo ‘sīhanādaṃ nadissāmī’ti siṅgālakaṃyeva [var] nadati, bheraṇḍakaṃyeva nadati [var] ; evamevaṃ kho tvaṃ, āvuso sarabha, aññatreva samaṇena gotamena ‘sīhanādaṃ nadissāmī’ti siṅgālakaṃyeva nadasi bheraṇḍakaṃyeva nadasi. Seyyathāpi, āvuso sarabha, ambukasañcarī [var] ‘purisakaravitaṃ [var] ravissāmī’ti ambukasañcariravitaṃyeva ravati; evamevaṃ kho tvaṃ, āvuso sarabha, aññatreva samaṇena gotamena ‘purisakaravitaṃ ravissāmī’ti, ambukasañcariravitaṃyeva ravasi. Seyyathāpi, āvuso sarabha, usabho suññāya gosālāya gambhīraṃ naditabbaṃ maññati; evamevaṃ kho tvaṃ, āvuso sarabha, aññatreva samaṇena gotamena gambhīraṃ naditabbaṃ maññasī”ti. Atha kho te paribbājakā sarabhaṃ paribbājakaṃ samantato vācāyasannitodakena sañjambharimakaṃsūti.
