如是我聞:一時佛在舍衛國 祇樹給孤獨園


爾時世尊晨朝著衣持缽,入城乞食。有一老婆羅門,捉杖持缽,而行乞食。時佛見已,語婆羅門言:

「汝今極老,何以捉杖持缽,而行乞食?」

婆羅門言:

「我有七子,各為妻娶,分財等與,我今無分。為子驅故,而行乞食!」

佛告之言:

「我今為汝說偈。汝能於大眾中說此偈不?」

答言:

「我能。」

爾時世尊即說偈言:

生子太歡喜    為之聚財寶
各為娶妻子    而便驅棄我
此等無孝慈    口言為父母
如彼羅剎子    垂死驅棄我
譬如馬槽櫪    滿中置穀[麥*弋]
少馬無敬讓    驅蹋於老者
此子亦如是    無有愛敬心
棄我使行乞    不如杖愛我
我今捉此杖    御狗及羊馬
行則佐我力    闇夜為我伴
指水知深淺    若趺扶杖起
蒙杖除多聞    是杖愛念我

婆羅門受此偈已,誦讀使利。爾時七子在大會中。時婆羅門於大眾中而作是言:

「汝等今當聽我所說!」

大眾默然。即說上偈。七子慚愧,起來抱父,各共修敬,將父歸家,置本坐處。諸子各出妙[疊*毛]二張,奉上於父。時婆羅門即作是念:

「我今得樂,是瞿曇力!瞿曇即是我阿闍梨。婆羅門法,法應供養和上、阿闍梨。」

選最好衣,往至佛所,問訊佛已,在一面坐,白佛言:

「世尊!我今家中得諸利樂,是汝之恩!我經書中說:『阿闍梨者,應與阿闍梨分。和上者,應與和上分。』瞿曇!汝今是我阿闍梨,應憐愍我,受我此衣!」

爾時世尊以憐愍故,為受是衣。


婆羅門踊躍,從座而起,歡喜而去。

爾時世尊晨朝著衣持缽,入舍衛城乞食。時有異婆羅門,年耆根熟,執杖持缽,家家乞食。

爾時世尊告婆羅門:

「汝今云何年耆根熟,柱杖持缽,家家乞食?」

婆羅門白佛:

「瞿曇!我家中所有財物悉付其子,為子取妻,然後捨家,是故柱杖持缽,家家乞食。」

佛告婆羅門:

「汝能於我所受誦一偈,還歸於眾中,為兒說耶?」

婆羅門白佛:

「能受,瞿曇!」

爾時世尊即說偈言:

生子心歡喜    為子聚財物
亦為娉其妻    而自捨出家
邊鄙田舍兒    違負於其父
人形羅剎心    棄捨於尊老
老馬無復用    則奪其[麩-夫+黃]
兒少而父老    家家行乞食
曲杖為最勝    非子為恩愛
為我防惡牛    免險地得安
能却兇暴狗    扶我闇處行
避深坑空井    草木棘
憑杖威力故    峙立不墮落

時婆羅門從世尊受斯偈已,還歸婆羅門大眾中為子而說,先白大眾:

「聽我所說。」

然後誦偈,如上廣說。其子愧怖,即抱其,還將入家,摩身洗浴,覆以青衣被,立為家主。

時婆羅門作是念:

「我今得勝族姓,是沙門瞿曇恩。我經所說:『為師者如師供養,為和尚者如和尚供養。』我今所得,皆沙門瞿曇力,即是我師,我今當以上妙好衣以奉瞿曇。」

時婆羅門持上妙衣,至世尊所,面前問訊慰勞已,退坐一面,白佛言:

「瞿曇!我今居家成就,是瞿曇力,我經記說:『為師者以師供養,為和尚者以和尚供養。』今日瞿曇即為我師,願受此衣,哀愍故!」

世尊即受,為哀愍故。爾時世尊為婆羅門說種種法,示教照喜。


時婆羅門聞佛所說,歡喜隨喜,作禮而去。

Catumahārājasuttaṃ

Sāvatthinidānaṃ Atha kho aññataro brāhmaṇamahāsālo lūkho lūkhapāvuraṇo [var] yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavatā saddhiṃ sammodi. Sammodanīyaṃ kathaṃ sāraṇīyaṃ vītisāretvā ekamantaṃ nisīdi. Ekamantaṃ nisinnaṃ kho taṃ brāhmaṇamahāsālaṃ bhagavā etadavoca– “kinnu tvaṃ, brāhmaṇa, lūkho lūkhapāvuraṇo”ti? “Idha me, bho gotama, cattāro puttā. Te maṃ dārehi saṃpuccha gharā nikkhāmentī”ti. “Tena hi tvaṃ, brāhmaṇa, imā gāthāyo pariyāpuṇitvā sabhāyaṃ mahājanakāye sannipatite puttesu ca sannisinnesu bhāsassu–

“Yehi jātehi nandissaṃ, yesañca bhavamicchisaṃ;
te maṃ dārehi saṃpuccha, sāva vārenti sūkaraṃ.
“Asantā kira maṃ jammā, tāta tātāti bhāsare;
rakkhasā puttarūpena, te jahanti vayogataṃ.
“Assova jiṇṇo nibbhogo, khādanā apanīyati;
bālakānaṃ pitā thero, parāgāresu bhikkhati.
“Daṇḍova kira me seyyo, yañce puttā anassavā;
caṇḍampi goṇaṃ vāreti, atho caṇḍampi kukkuraṃ.
“Andhakāre pure hoti, gambhīre gādhamedhati;
daṇḍassa ānubhāvena, khalitvā patitiṭṭhatī”ti.

Atha kho so brāhmaṇamahāsālo bhagavato santike imā gāthāyo pariyāpuṇitvā sabhāyaṃ mahājanakāye sannipatite puttesu ca sannisinnesu abhāsi–

“Yehi jātehi nandissaṃ, yesañca bhavamicchisaṃ;
te maṃ dārehi saṃpuccha, sāva vārenti sūkaraṃ.
“Asantā kira maṃ jammā, tāta tātāti bhāsare;
rakkhasā puttarūpena, te jahanti vayogataṃ.
“Assova jiṇṇo nibbhogo, khādanā apanīyati;

Atha kho naṃ brāhmaṇamahāsālaṃ puttā gharaṃ netvā nhāpetvā paccekaṃ dussayugena acchādesuṃ. Atha kho so brāhmaṇamahāsālo ekaṃ dussayugaṃ ādāya yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavatā saddhiṃ sammodi. Sammodanīyaṃ kathaṃ sāraṇīyaṃ vītisāretvā ekamantaṃ nisīdi. Ekamantaṃ nisinno kho brāhmaṇamahāsālo bhagavantaṃ etadavoca– “mayaṃ, bho gotama, brāhmaṇā nāma ācariyassa ācariyadhanaṃ pariyesāma. Paṭiggaṇhatu me bhavaṃ gotamo ācariyadhanan”ti. Paṭiggahesi bhagavā anukampaṃ upādāya. Atha kho so brāhmaṇamahāsālo bhagavantaṃ etadavoca– “abhikkantaṃ, bho gotama…pe… upāsakaṃ maṃ bhavaṃ gotamo dhāretu ajjatagge pāṇupetaṃ saraṇaṃ gatan”ti.
